In a controversial and significant decision, Germany has accepted more than 36,000 Afghans under the "Ortskräfteverfahren" program since 2021. This program is designed to support individuals who were at risk due to their cooperation with international forces, especially German forces, in Afghanistan.
Why this action?
With the fall of the Afghan government in 2021, many Afghans were forced to flee the country, and Germany, as one of the countries that was actively present in Afghanistan, decided to accept these individuals. This action not only demonstrates Germany's commitment to human rights but is also considered a positive step towards strengthening international and humanitarian relations.
However, this decision has also faced many challenges and criticisms.
