In 1990, Germany became world champion for the third time with a goal in the final against Argentina, and images of this victory still linger in memory. Now, 35 years after that historic day, a new film titled 'A Summer in Italy' explores the lives and fates of the champions of this team.
Where Did They Go After Glory?
For many of the players at that time, this championship was the pinnacle of their sports careers. However, the harsh reality is that only a few of them managed to remain in the world of football after their retirement. Only a handful of these champions have stayed active in football as coaches or managers. Andreas Brehme, who scored the decisive penalty in the final, is no longer with us, and undoubtedly, the absence of him and other key figures like Franz Beckenbauer and Frank Mill brings a lot of regrets.
This new film allows viewers to take a behind-the-scenes look at the untold moments of those days. It also showcases images from that era that have never been published before.
While Germany became world champion only once more in 2014, Beckenbauer's enthusiastic predictions that the country would dominate world football for years with top players from the DDR after reunification did not come true. Germany was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the USA and experienced difficult years in football until successfully returning to the top with the 2006 World Cup.
