Recently, the large German energy company EnBW announced that it will significantly reduce its previous targets for expanding wind farms. This decision was taken by the company's CEO – introduced in an official statement as a “strategic review” – and will affect all EnBW operating regions, especially in the north and east of the country.

Reason for Revising Targets

According to EnBW officials, several factors including rising construction costs, supply chain problems, and changes in government support policies have put pressure on the previous wind plans. The company believes that to maintain financial sustainability and avoid unsuccessful investments, it needs to readjust the scale of projects.

Government Reaction

Economy Minister Raïche, in response to this move, said “this step could help improve the balance of the energy market,” confirming the positive aspects of the decision; however, some industry observers warned that slowing the expansion of wind could harm Germany’s overall “sustainable energy” goals.

While EnBW intends to publish its new plans in detail in the coming months, the revision is expected to have a significant impact on wind projects nationwide.
