The German government intends to change the law regarding bakers' working hours on Sundays, allowing them to work more than three hours on this day. This decision could help bakers cope better with the competitive market conditions, but concerns about the implications of this action for workers have also increased.

Proposed Changes and Reactions

The current law, which has been in effect since 1996, allows bakery employees to work only three hours on Sundays. This duration is no longer deemed sufficient by bakery representatives, and given the current market conditions, a change is necessary. According to them, this change could lead to "real equality in competition" without affecting customer working hours.

However, the Food and Services Workers' Union (NGG) has strongly criticized this plan, deeming it unrealistic. They argue that the assumption that workers would easily want to work longer hours on Sundays is incorrect. In the union's view, increasing working hours on holidays would only make these jobs less attractive and drive more workers away from the profession.

Despite bakers welcoming this change, it remains to be seen whether this decision will truly benefit workers or, conversely, exacerbate their problems. Ultimately, these changes could pose a significant challenge for the government and the labor community.
