The UN has declared a "catastrophe" in the city of El Obeid, Sudan, issuing a red alert. This decision follows statements by Volker Turk, the UN Human Rights Commissioner, during an emergency session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Critical Situation in El Obeid

Turk emphasized that "the signs from El Obeid are clear and evident," stating that another catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan. He has urged government leaders to take immediate actions to prevent crimes against humanity. Civilians in this city have been under siege-like conditions for 18 months and are severely affected by the ruthless attacks of drones.

In recent days, the UN, several governments, and aid organizations have warned of the possibility of renewed attacks by RSF forces on El Obeid. Turk referred to concerns about the recurrence of the widespread crimes that this group committed last year in El Fasher, in North Darfur. Reports indicate that at least 6,000 people lost their lives in that attack.

The Ongoing War

The city of El Obeid is located in the North Kordofan region of Sudan and has been under siege by militia groups for some time. In Sudan, the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have been engaged in fierce battles for the past three years. In this war, tens of thousands have been killed, and more than 11 million people have been forced to flee their homes.
