Hamburg is significantly expanding the alcohol ban area to reduce problems caused by alcohol consumption and improve the quality of life for residents. Starting in August, new areas of the St. George neighborhood will be included in this ban. In this area, individuals can carry alcohol such as beer and wine, but they will not be allowed to drink it.
Residents' Protests and New Solutions
In recent months, residents of the neighborhood have repeatedly protested against problems caused by alcohol and drug use around the central station. According to officials, this ban has been implemented to reduce social burdens and improve living conditions in St. George. This law will initially be in effect for one year, after which a reassessment of its impacts will be conducted.
In addition to enforcing the ban, more programs to support individuals suffering from addiction and homelessness have also been planned. With an increase in the number of social workers on the streets, more controls will be conducted on individuals who disrupt public order. According to officials, many of those causing disturbances in these areas lack stable housing.
