Last night, Ukraine once again witnessed a large-scale airstrike by Russia that occurred before the NATO summit in Turkey. In these attacks, severe explosions were reported in Kyiv and its suburbs, resulting in at least seven fatalities and many injuries.
Worrying Developments in Kyiv
Russian airstrikes, especially in the early hours of the day, triggered alarm sirens in many regions of Ukraine. In Kyiv, residential buildings were targeted, and an apartment block was severely damaged, revealing a large hole in its center. Local officials reported that thousands of people have fled to underground shelters.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, warned his NATO allies in a video message that Russia may carry out more attacks before the NATO meeting begins. He emphasized that such behavior from Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is entirely normal and aims to create chaos and more bloodshed.
Immediate Need for Military Support
Zelensky continued his message by urging Western countries to increase their military support for Ukraine and stressed that any delay in delivering air defense systems could lead to loss of human lives. He believes that the United States and European countries must make necessary decisions quickly so that Ukraine can withstand Russian ballistic attacks.
While Ukraine has been fighting against the Russian invasion with Western support for over four years, Zelensky pointed to existing problems in securing defense systems and expressed concern about the shortage of Patriot missile stocks. He also mentioned the possibility of domestic production of these systems in Ukraine.
At the NATO summit, Zelensky will have an opportunity to meet with the President of the United States to convey his requests directly. U.S. officials have also reported efforts to end this war, but given recent developments, a worrying situation has arisen for Ukraine.
