In a significant move, parents in Brandenburg have showcased their protest against the shortage of teachers and educational issues in the state by collecting 10,000 signatures. This action is part of a campaign titled "Education Instead of Absence - Sustainable Education for Brandenburg" which was submitted to the Ministry of Education.
The Power of Parents' Voices
Although the number of signatures collected is only half of the 20,000 signatures required for a public initiative, the campaign representative, Ulrich Maurerberger, stated that the action has achieved its main success: "Our message has clearly reached the authorities, and the consequences of the teacher shortage are now more in focus than ever."
The Minister of Education, Gordon Hoffmann, acknowledged this issue and stated that reforms are underway, and it seems that attention is being directed towards creating new jobs in the education system. Statistics show that in the 2024/25 school year, over 322,000 teaching hours in Brandenburg's public schools remain unfilled, equivalent to 2.2 percent of the total teaching hours.
Long-term Goals of Parents
Annette Kehling, spokesperson for the parents' association, announced their determination to pursue this issue, stating: "Our goal is to provide a sustainable educational resource for all students in Brandenburg." A parent concerned about their children's educational future now has greater hope for positive changes.
This action by parents in Brandenburg can be seen as a significant social movement and may serve as a model for other states and regions. Will these voices ultimately lead to tangible changes in the education system?
